Fenty Agrees to Sell Up

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 29/12/2020

JOHN Fenty has agreed to sell Grimsby Town Football Club, finally agreeing on terms after two years of talks with a consortium led by businessman Tom Shutes. Although there are legal steps to go through and the Football League ownership requirements to negotiate fans can be confident that they are witnessing the end of the Fenty era.

Chairman Philip Day issued a brief statement saying: "I have been informed that heads of terms have been agreed between John Fenty and the consortium for the sale of his shares and the repayment of his directors' loans. There will be no further comment on the sale from either side until legal formalities have been completed and EFL approval has been obtained."

After several weeks of increasing pressure on Fenty following stories about his business dealings which caused him to step down from his role at the council, the consortium has improved their offer to take over the club by buying Mr Fenty's shares and debt.

Town fans have been boycotting the streams of games, even giving their £10 fee to the opposition in many cases in the game against Morecambe. However, tonight when Grimsby take on Oldham in a must-win game at Blundell Park, almost everyone will be able to watch if they wish to.

John Fenty has been on the Grimsby Town board since around 2001. He became chairman in 2004, since when he has effectively owned the club, almost he dropped the Chairman position in 2011.

The new consortium's immediate priority is to appoint a new manager. Town have no manager or assistant manager and coach Ben Davies is in temporary charge of the team. The Mariners have had a terrible first half of the season, not helped by the goings-on behind the scenes and poor decisions from ex-boss Ian Holloway.
