Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Oster To Delay Any Decision On His Future

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 28/02/2003

ON his loan return for the third time to Blundell Park, John Oster talked to the Grimsby Telegraph about his plans for the future and though he looks forward to playing against Coventry at Blundell Park, his future remains unclear.

Paul Groves has made no secret of wanting to keep Oster at Grimsby Town beyond his loan period with a fee of £75,000 being bandied around but the Welsh international has a contract at Sunderland until the end of the and he has indicated that he will not rushing into making a decision.

"It's good to be back and playing football because I was stuck up there at Sunderland. I was back in the Reserves and back to square one. I would have preferred to have stayed here in the first place but Howard Wilkinson called me back. I played a couple of games and then I was on the bench and back training with the Reserves." "I don't know what Howard Wilkinson's thoughts are on the matter but he took me back and did nothing with me. I can stay for a month and I'd love to stay until the end of the season if I can."

"But there are no guarantees that Grimsby are going to be in the first division and I'll keep my options open. Sunderland could be in the first division themselves next season."

"I'm not going to commit myself early to anything when I've got time to think about it. But it's good to be back here where I've got a manager that likes me and that flatters me and makes me feel appreciated."

TH says: There will be some who will condemn Oster for this stand but one cannot blame him for looking at what is best for himself. It is natural that if an opportunity arises to enable him to stay in the Premier league, he would want to take that chance.

He has proved his worth since coming back to BP and we should be grateful and appreciate the difference he has made whilst he has been here. It will be very difficult for him to have to take a significant wage cut if he does finally agree to stay with Town.
