More Than Just A Coincidence?

By: Richard Lord

PERHAPS it's just me, or is there a pattern emerging between Grimsby Town and Coventry City? We all know what happened last season when the two teams played each other.

The Mariners won 1-0 at Highfield Road and Sky Blues' boss Gordon Stachan was subsequently given the boot. Four months later and the score was reversed and Lennie Lawrence was shown the door.

It's a strange and symmetrical pattern that doesn't occur all that often in football but there are signs that it could be happening again this season. And if so, I would bet on a 3-2 win for the Mariners.

When Town travelled across to Coventry earlier in the season, they went there amidst one of the club's worst goal droughts - one goal in six games. Now, which team are presently in the middle of a goal drought?

Coventry haven't managed to find the back of the net in any of their last five matches but Grimsby's defence also happens to be the most generous in the First Division.

I believe that with Jansen and Joachim upfront, Coventry should have the quality to score against a leaky defence, but Town have also shown signs that they are finding a bit of form at just the right time.

It's certainly a winnable game for the Mariners and three points will be essential considering Brighton's own good form and Stoke's recent win. Wednesday also seem to grab a win at the most vital of times.

So, football isn't really down to individual skill or master tacticians, it's all down to the thought-process of superstitious minds. Despite anything that might happen in tomorrow's game, I've discovered the formula.

Grimsby will win 3-2!
