Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Nielsen No-Go

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 05/12/2000

It emerged today that David Nielsen's proposed move to Grimsby is once again on the rocks as a result of the players wage demands. Nielsen is apparently demanding a figure in the region of £6,000 per week - way more than the club can currently afford.

Manager Lennie Lawrence had hoped to complete the deal early this week after extensive negotiations with Nielsen's agent on Friday. It has since been reported, however, that the player has been advised to hold out for a lucrative deal that would easily make him the most highly paid player in the history of the club. "I've spoken to all sorts of people. I've spoken to Copenhagen and his (Nielsen's) agent on Friday night - It's not easy and I didn't expect it to be," said Lawrence, before reiterating that the deal is more complicated than weekend reports had suggested. Having agreed a fee of £425,000 with Roy Hodgson at FC Copenhagen, Lawrence is looking to conclude the deal as rapidly as possible, as he suggested that the protracted negotiations may harm Nielsen's on-field performances: "It would be nice to get it tied up this week, but all the lad has to worry about is playing." Meanwhile, Grimsby's three Argentinian trialists will make their Grimsby bow in todays hastily arranged friendly against Barnsley. It is expected that Franco Vottola, Christian Otero and Maximiliano Ginobili will all feature in the Blundell Park fixture which will be played behind closed doors.
