Nielsen Confusion

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 04/12/2000

There is confusion tonight over exactly how close Grimsby Town are to concluding a deal bringing David Nielsen to the club on a permanent basis. Weekend reports suggested that the deal was almost complete, but it now seems that all is not cut and dried.

Manager Lennie Lawrence, who on Sunday was quoted as saying "I'd like to get [the deal completed] on Monday or Tuesday," appeared to be back-tracking on the issue this evening as he said that the deal was "very complicated" and will not be happening so quickly. Lawrence confirmed that talks with both the player and his agent are on-going, but said that it would be "wrong to give the impression that the deal is just about done." It is thought that the move is being hampered due to protracted talks over the terms that are being demanded by Nielsen. Elsewhere, it emerged that Crystal Palace defender Neil Ruddock has been reported to the FA after Saturday's draw with the Mariners. Referee Bill Jordan filed the report after Ruddock was restrained by team-mates during an argument with him after the final whistle. It is likely that the ex-Liverpool man will receive a lengthy ban and a possible fine after having landed himself in the dock at Soho Square on several occasions. Also today, the FA confirmed that Grimsby's clash with Wimbledon has been re-arranged for December 13th. Lennie Lawrence had hoped to leave the visit to Selhurst Park until after Christmas, however, the match will finally go ahead next week at 7.45pm after two previous postponements.
