Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Farewell Cornwall?

By: Paul Holmes
Date: 16/05/2001

Luke Cornwall could have played his last game for the Mariners after Fulham refused the Mariners permission for him to play in Sunday's massive end of season game. The pacey striker, after a shaky start, has become a big hit with the fans.

His 4 goals have been vital in the Mariners survival campaign and he was a key feature in the run of 3 wins in a row over Tranmere, Watford and West Brom.

Mariners boss Lennie Lawrence will now definitely have to shuffle his pack with Cornwall, Peter Handyside and Stacy Coldicott all set to miss the game.

Michael Jeffrey looks set to replace Cornwall to partner Steve Livingstone. Paul Raven may start his first game at Blundell Park this year, as long as he feels no ill effects from today's game, also set to continue in the middle will be Danny Butterfield.

Lawrence could also try to contain Fulham and play 4-4-1-1 with Donovan playing behind Livingstone and Willems taking a place in the midfield.

Cornwall may feature for the reserves this week, who have a massive task of 3 games in 5 days. On Monday they travel to Stoke, Wednesday sees Walsall visit Blundell Park before a visit to Sheffield United on Friday.

The game against Sheffield United will be a big test for Reserve team Coach Paul Wilkinson who will probably have no first teamers at his disposal with the already stretched first team playing two days later.

The team will be made up of youth players and trialists, that may include Manchester United pair Michael Rose and Mark Studley as well as Liverpool duo Stephen Torpey and Chris Thompson.

All 4 were on trial at Blundell Park a few weeks ago and Lawrence expressed his keenness in having another look at all of them.
