Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Cornwall Savours Brace

SATURDAY'S super sub match winner Luke Cornwall says he is determined to use his loan spell at Grimsby to rebuild the Fulham striker's career. Cornwall, who scored twice against Tranmere at the weekend, helped give the Mariners three invaluable points in the fight against the drop.

"I've got another year on my contract at Fulham and I'll take it from there." said the Lambeth born front man. "I came to Grimsby to get experience and I'll see how it goes. It's been all right so far. I'm getting a game and I can't complain. We can definitely stay up."

The 20-year-old Londonder revealed how he had followed Grimsby manager Lennie Lawrence's half time dressing room instructions to the letter, after Town had gone into a 1-0 deficit at the break, only to end up winning 3-1 after a second half blitz by Campbell and fellow substitute Steve Livingstone. "At half time the gaffer said: 'you're coming on, just try and do your best, and try and get a goal for yourself' and luckily for me the ball has dropped to me in the box and I have put it away, so I am happy."

"I am delighted with my two goals. I have now got to go on from them and get a few more. I am going to keep plodding on and see if I can get a regular place in the side. I played four games before this and never got a goal, but it comes with confidence really" said the Fulham forward, who last scored a senior goal almost three years ago.

"I thought my pace was frightening out there. I got a few free kicks." added Cornwall.

Substitute Cornwall scored the first two goals, with fellow replacement Livingstone bagging the third, in what proved to be an inspired masterstroke by manager Lennie Lawrence to introduce the striking pair at the start of the second half.

Livingstone had not played for six weeks after recovering from a calf injury and the burly striker said: "I don’t think that I would have lasted a full game but once I got on things just seemed to go for me. I’ve been out far ages and the frustration was starting to get to me so, I’m just glad to be back."

The big Town striker controversially set up the second goal as well as scoring the third, after he had clashed with Tranmere's keeper John Achterberg in a challenge that left the Rovers man down on the ground injured, whilst Cornwall proceeded to tap in Donovan’s cross.

Livingstone however felt it was a fair goal saying: "The ball was there and I was entitled to go for it. I was trying to lift it over the keeper and I don’t think it was a foul. It was a 50/50 ball and I’m just glad that we scored from it."
