Notts County: The Reaction

FOLLOWING Grimsby's 2-0 defeat of Notts County on Tuesday night, midfielder Iain Anderson believes it will only be a matter of time before the Mariners start to establish themselves as one of the division's top teams.

Last night, when Bristol City were defeated 3-0 at Wycombe, leaders Brighton lost heavily at Brentford and a seemingly average Colchester beat Stockport away, the win has left Grimsby just six points off top spot, despite being 14th in the league.

Speaking to the Grimsby Telegraph, Anderson said: "I think we can easily get up there now. There's only been a couple of teams better than us so far, and the rest have been games we've given away. It's a tough league and anyone can beat anybody on their day."

The former Preston winger senses that confidence is high within the camp. He continued: "The boys are buzzing and you can feel it in the dressing room and when we're training. We've got a lift, but that's what winning games does for you."

Stuart Campbell felt that the game should have been wrapped up earlier on in the game. He said: "That's the best we've played in that first 25 minutes. Over the last month we've been playing well but not getting the results our performances have warranted."

Assistant manager Graham Rodger was left to do the talking after the game, while Paul Groves' vocal chords were given a much needed rest.

And Rodger was fully aware of the consistency needed if Town were to mount a serious promotion push. He said: "We're looking for consistency. If you get that then the results follow.

"These have been two massive games, back-to-back at home, and you can't ask for any more. This needs to be a springboard for us. We have to continue to perform well and get the results."

Rodger was also aware of the fans' contribution. He said: "We have to give credit to the fans. Over the last two games they've got more than behind the lads and made a massive difference."

Both Groves and Rodger now have to prepare the team for the weekend trip to Yorkshire where they will come up against a Barnsley side unbeaten at home and fresh from a 3-2 win at Peterborough.

They will include in their ranks Peter Handyside and Tony Gallimore, two heroes of the famous promotion-winning team from 1998.
