Where will Grimsby finish?

Chairman's Appeal For Support!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 15/05/2003

GRIMSBY Town chairman Peter Furneaux has asked fans to help the club make a big impact on the second division next season. The board aims to give Paul Groves a war chest but the size of that will depend on what income is generated off the field.

With the demise of the ITV Digital deal and the collapse of the transfer market the Mariners are now dependent on the money they generate locally.

The Grimsby Telegraph reports today that player contracts negotiated at the time the TV money was flooding in are taking a large chunk of the club's income and the board has had to support Town to the tune of nearly £1million in loans.

But they are now looking to the community to show their commitment.

"We urge you to back the club in any way you can, whether it be through the purchase of a season ticket, buying a new shirt or investing in the club through shares," said Peter Furneaux.

"There has been an excellent response to the availability of shares in the club, and it appears that the board was spot on with its decision to sell shares at £1 each, with the minimum amount being £100. Fans have been busy applying and this is very pleasing to see."

"We would like to publicly thank our fans for their tremendous support over what has been a difficult season," said Furneaux, who added that support of sponsors and advertisers had been a lifeline in difficult circumstances.

"This kind of assistance from the local community, and our loyal exiled fans, is of paramount importance if the club is to attack the new season in a positive frame of mind, and with a squad that can challenge for the top places in Division Two." END
