Macca Heading For 500!

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 16/08/2002

ANOTHER boost for Town comes in the fact that record breaking John McDermott wants to finish his career with his one and only club Grimsby Town. The 32-year-old full back will become the first player to play 500 games for the Mariners tomorrow against Derby County.

The club skipper Macca first brought to our attention by Mick Lyons when he arrived as a YTS player 16 years ago. "It looks that way. I don't see anybody knocking the door down do you?!" joked the Middlesbrough-born right back, who passed Keith Jobling's appearance record of 450 League games 18 months ago.

"I'm captain now and that's a great honour," Macca told the Grimsby Telegraph. "That's thanks to Grovesy and I'm settled in the town which is a known fact."

Before tomorrow's televised clash against the Rams the club will hold a presentation for Macca. He added jokingly: "What will they give me now? They must be running out of ideas!"

Looking forward to the game, the Mariners' captain isn't taking any thing for granted saying: "It's going to be a tough League game. That's all it is. Derby are a good side who have just been in the Premiership and, no disrespect to any of the other teams, but it will be nice to play against better players.

"I just want our fans to be noisy and they've always come up trumps for us in the past. We need them more than ever tomorrow."
