Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Sunday's Division One Round-Up: Week 16

By: Richard Lord
Date: 25/11/2001

GRIMSBY slipped into the relegation zone this weekend for the first time this season after narrowly losing 1-0 at Turf Moor on Friday night.

Home > 2001-2002 Season > League Round-Ups > Week 16

The Results

Crewe 0-3 Notts Forest
Man City 2-1 Rotherham
Millwall 1-2 Gillingham
Norwich 2-1 Barnsley
Preston 2-1 Crystal Palace
Sheff Wed 5-0 Stockport
Walsall 1-2 Sheff Utd
West Brom 1-0 Bradford
Wimbledon 0-1 Wolves

The Table

After Sheff Wed's impressive 5-0 defeat of Stockport, it sees Grimsby slip into the bottom three on 20 points. County remain bottom with Barnsley remaining just above them after their 2-1 defeat at Norwich. Gillingham hauled themselves clear of danger for now with a great victory at Millwall. Sheff Utd did the Mariners a favour by beating lowly Walsall away, and Nottm Forest put three past Crewe at Gresty Road. Both clubs now find themselves deep in the relegation battle. Rotherham were also beaten, which keeps them in 18th place. Only two points separate five teams, with Town amongst them.

Division's Talent

Richard Cresswell (left) was highly rated at York before moving to Sheff Wed where he failed to reach his potential. After a spell at Leicester he is now rebuilding his career at Preston and was on the score sheet yesterday against Crystal Palace.

West Brom captain and former Rangers midfielder Derek McInnes (right) bagged a goal for the Baggies yesterday as his team beat Bradford 1-0. He missed a large part of last season but has since come straight back into the team and carried on from where he left off.

Finally Trond Egil Soltvedt (left), the Owl's aging Norwegian international, has been showing good form and was on target in their win over bottom club Stockport yesterday. The former Southampton midfielder left the Saints to join Wednesday when they were still in the Premiership.

Town's Next Opponents

Arsenal have been largely inconsistent this season, especially away from home but have been their usual dominant selves at Highbury - their only blip this season at home was the 4-2 defeat to Charlton in the Premiership.

There's no question that the Gunners have other, more important issues to think about (the Champions League) and the team Arsené Wenger is likely to field is almost impossible to predict. Even their reserve side is a force to be reckoned with, a team who destroyed Man Utd's reserve team 4-0 in the 3rd round of the Worthington Cup. With their strongest team expected to face Man Utd this afternoon in the big match, Grimsby could expect to face players like Oleg Luzhny (left), Matthew Upson and Sylvian Wiltord (right) - hardly making it any easier for Lennie Lawrence's men!

Path for Grimsby

Following the midweek trip to Arsenal is a clash with Man City at Blundell Park. Another home game follows a week later when the Mariners entertain another high-flying team: Wolves. If Town somehow make it into the League Cup quarter finals, they will play that game on December 12, if not, their next game will be on December 15 away at Walsall - a potential six-pointer. The Saturday before Christmas will be a trip to Preston, and on Boxing Day there is a home tie with Coventry.
