Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Cornwall Goes Home

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 16/05/2001

Luke Cornwall the on loan striker from Fulham has now returned to his club after being refused permission to play in the Mariners clash with them next Sunday. Grimsby manager Lennie Lawrence is however still hoping to sign him during the summer months.

Cornwall's agreement to any deal Lawrence may arrange will depend on the final division one positions. It would be unlikely that Cornwall would want to join Grimsby if they were relegated to the second division.

"We're interested, but it depends where we are as a club but, most of all, it depends on what they want," said Lawrence to the Grimsby Telegraph who pointed out that with a huge array of strikers at Craven Cottage, Tigana is unlikely to ask the earth for the striker, who is seventh in line for a place in the team.

Lawrence is very keen to sign Cornwall adding: "The goal against West Brom was worth three times the amount of money we paid for him. For somebody who's on very small money really, it's been very pleasing. He's not the finished article, but he's got decent potential and he'd be a useful one to have. He's got the potential to be a first division player. He's not one yet, but he could be."

"In my humble opinion there's not a lot of point him staying at Fulham.

"We need four or five strikers. We've got Livvo and Bradley Allen and Jeffrey, but we need one or two more. We don't score enough goals and anyone who is going to make a contribution to that is welcome here."
