Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Spalding to Scunny

News from 4th August 2000

Steve Croudson

Second-choice keeper Steve Croudson was the hero for the Mariners last night after Town beat Spalding 5-4 on penalties in the Lincolnshire Senior Cup. The Grimsby-born keeper saved the crucial fifth penalty from Mark Melson after Croudson had earlier made a brilliant second half save to keep Town in the game.

A win in the Lincolnshire cup of any form was the perfect tonic for Town's players and fans to approach tomorrow's "friendly" against ex-Town boss Brian Laws' Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park.

Meanwhile Alan Buckley's first-choice team when the season actually starts for proper is becoming clearer as injuries clear up and players leave. Centre backs Paul Raven and Peter Handyside both featured in last night's cup game, and it looks like Lee Ashcroft has finally departed to Wigan. Buckley is also rumoured to be interested in signing Port Vale striker Gareth Taylor on loan.

The likely Town Squad for tomorrow's game is: Coyne, Croudson, McDermott, Butterfield, Handyside, Raven, Gallimore, Chapman, Donovan, Groves, Coldicott, Pouton, Burnett, D Smith, Allen, Clare, Livingstone, Black, Buckley, Bloomer, Rowan, A Smith.

Saturday's game against Scunny will also be the last opportunity at a weekend anyway to sample the atmosphere of the "Matchday" page before we move to next season's totally revamped site.
