Two New Signings

News From 23rd June 2000

Alan Buckley

Grimsby Town boss Alan Buckley secured the signatures of two new young squad members last week. Neither are likely to feature much in the first team next season, but both are names to watch out for in the future.

Grimsby-born striker Jonathan Rowan was offered a 1-year deal, after a two year spell in the club's Youth Team, for whom last season he scored 12 times last season. He also scored for Town in last season's Lincolnshire Senior Cup Final victory against Lincoln United.

Rowan explained:

"I was offered a one-year deal and it's up to me to take it from there.
"I've got to prove that I'm worth it and if I show the manager that then there'll be more next year.
"My target is just to try and get a regular place in the Reserves and score some goals.
"It's not a big squad and there's only four strikers here and hopefully I can score a few goals. That's my main goal."
The second signature is former 20-year-old Barnsley winger Andy Smith, who has accepted a three-month deal at Blundell Park. Smith had an extended trial at Blundell Park at the end of last season, featuring in several reserve games for the Mariners. Town boss Alan Buckley explained:
"It's more than a trial. He joined us last season and did well, We wanted to have another look at him for a bit longer and rather than throw a two or three year contract at him we've taken him on for three months."
