Laws Swipe at Bonetti

News From 15th May 2000

Ivano with Bill Carr

Former Grimsby boss Brian Laws, now manager of relegated Scunthorpe United, has blasted his former player Ivano Bonetti, now himself a manager of Scottish club Dundee. Laws claimed that Bonetti would be better suited to running an Italian restaurant than a football team!

Bonetti's response has been to try and set up a pre-season friendly between Grimsby and Dundee. Town have already booked their traditional pre-season tour of Ireland, but there are several slots free in which the Dundee game could be played, and both clubs are keen for the fixture to go ahead.

Dario Magri, Benetti's translator (as he was in Ivano's Grimsby days) said:

"It would be a dream and it would give us all a great experience.
"It would be a very emotional experience for Ivano.
"He might have to play a half on each side!"

Magri also revealed that Ivano has not forgotten Grimsby, and like many of the readers of this site, he looks out for their results from afar.

"He always looks for their result and always knows where they are in the table whenever I ask him.
"And he's always asking about his good friends, like Paul Groves, Macca, Mark Lever and Livvo. He has never forgotten that very special time we had at Grimsby"

Dundee have already organised their pre-season tour of, where else, the Italian Alps.
They too have space in their calendar for a match, probably in late July, which would inevitably draw a big crowd to Blundell Park for Town fans to see their former hero.

Postscript:

The club have provisionally agreed to a pre-season fixture with Bonetti's Dundee on Friday July 21st.
