THE Mariners wrapped up three points against Salford with a purple patch 10-minute first-half spell which netted three goals. Green, Vernam amd Soonsup-Bell scored, although Salford had looked the better side up to that point. After the break, Salford again began well and pulled one back.

But Grimsby had chances against Salford on the break and failed to add to their haul, and the match finished 3-1 to leave Town just below the play-offs.

Kieran Green was the only change from the Notts County win, replacing Jamie Walker in midfield.

Salford started well, and Graydon tried to lob Smith with 4 minutes gone, but just missed the target. Alfie Dorrington then went close from a long throw-in which broke to him, but his volley went just wide. Rosaire Longelo was then allowed to run into the danger zone unchallenged and fired over from the edge of the box.

It was all Salford, but Town edged in front with a trademark Green flick from a Vernam corner. The two swapped roles with Green's cross bouncing to Vernam to volley past the keeper to make it 2-0. Salford didn't know what had hit them, and their defence was asleep when Soonsup-Bell was left unmarked to head in his first goal from a pinpoint Burns cross.

Town were slow to react early in the second half when a Longelo shot crashed against the bar. Stockton was first to react and pulled a goal back for the visitors.

With Salford pressing for a second, gaps opened up, and Cook had a header plucked off the line by Young, and another effort from the substitute was saved.

Grimsby, though, were equal to the challenge of preserving their two goal cushion and picked up three valuable points. They face another promotion contender at Blundell Park for an early kick-off on Saturday in the form of Bromley, who currently occupy pole position on the grid. Town will be looking to gain revenge for their 2-0 defeat in the away game just before Christmas last year.
