Seven Goal Blitz

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 27/09/2025

GRIMSBY trashed Cheltenham this afternoon, scoring 7 goals against the managerless team. The visitors had taken a shock lead early in the game, but two fantastic strikes by Walker turned the game around in the last 5 minutes of the first half.

Two sendings off (the first to arch-villain Harry Pell), either side of the break for Cheltenham essentially put the game out of reach for the visitors, but Town still needed to take advantage of the situation, which they did in style. Kabia, Sweeney (twice), Vernam and Khouri all added to Town's tally as merciless Town were rampant.

David Artell made three changes from last week's non-show at Barnet. Oduo, Sweeney and Green returned with Staunton, Amaluzor and Khouri all named as subs.

Cheltenham had some early possession without really troubling Town, and they scored in a rare attack when a cross from Archer eluded the Grimsby defence, allowing Hutchinson to stroke it into the net and silence Blundell Park.

Town continued to patiently probe for an opening and were unlucky when Vernam hit the underside of the crossbar. Two brilliant goals, though from Walker, turned the game around. The first came when the Scot received the ball, took a touch and blasted it into the top left-hand corner from 30 yards. Shortly afterwards, Vernam provided Walker with a short pass which he curled into the net from 20 yards out.

With fans still absorbing the sudden change in the status of the game, a further bonus came their way when ex-Mariner Harry Pell received a second yellow for bringing down Vernam.

Cheltenham's half-time plan was rendered redundant when Angol was shown a second yellow 5 mins into the second period for bringing down McJannet. Town, a goal, and 2 men up, didn't want a repeat of the MK Dons game and took advantage of the extra space to launch wave after wave of attacks. Cheltenham had no choice but to try to limit the damage.

The goals swiftly followed, with Kabia lashing one in from outside the box. Sweeney and Vernam added two more before two rounds of substitution, which saw Svanthorsson's first appearance of the season.

There was still time for Sweeny to add a second before subs Soonsup-Bell and Khouri combined for the final goal.

It was a pleasing performance from Town, who didn't panic when they went a goal down. They dominated the match even before the first red card, and never took their foot off the gas when the match was won. Players coming back from injuries also gives Town extra options with a busy Autumn schedule
