Away Point at Accrington

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 23/08/2025

GRIMSBY had to settle for a point at Accrington Stanley, but it could have been more, especially if Jaze Kabia had scored his penalty when Town were leading 1-0. Accrington fought back, though, and grabbed an equaliser when Henderson glanced in a free kick from the ref's drop ball.

David Artell made four changes from the win at Walsall. Warren, Staunton, Turi and Amaluzor started in place of Sweeney, Tharme, Green and Vernam. Town started slowly, perhaps getting used to the new team, and Brown hit the post for the home side after 10 minutes.

Town though improved and drew first blood when a Staunton free kick found a path over the defence, and Kabia's deep run was not picked up, giving the striker a simple close-range finish. Khouri then had two good chances on the break to add a second from a Kabia through ball, but he blasted the second over after his first effort was blocked.

Town looked to be in a good position early in the second half when the ref gave a soft penalty when Rodgers was blocked in the box by Rawson. Wright dived to his right to make a save, and Town failed with the follow-up. Yet another missed penalty.

Accrington came back into the game when the referee's drop ball was blasted into the box on the volley, with Walton glancing a header into the far post net. It could have been worse for Grimsby, but substitute Woods was ruled offside when he found the net with his header following a long throw.

On balance, a draw was probably a fair result, and Grimsby can look to 7 points gained since the "distraction" of the game with Man Utd was announced. That will be the Mariners' next game on Wednesday, when Blundell Park will be rocking for Town's game against arguably England's biggest club.
