GRIMSBY left it very late to beat Newport with a winning goal from Kieran Green in the last minute of extra time. The Mariners had taken a lead in the first minute of the game through an own goal, and should have comfortably won. Missed opportunities and a goal against the run of play from the away side almost cost Town 2 points.
David Artell made two changes from Town's last league game: Amaluzor and Walker replaced Burns and Khouri in midfield. Town got off to a perfect start from a corner, when a Green flick-on was diverted into his own net by Baker-Richardson. Grimsby dominated the opening half, with Vernam outstanding on the left. Vernam had a shot saved after 10 minutes, the Newport keeper made a great save from Jamie Walker, and then Green won a penalty when Baker stuck a leg out. Kabia's spot kick was saved by the keeper, who also did well to save Green's attempt from the rebound.
Town continued to dominate, and Vernam drew another good save from Tzanev just before half-time.
After the break, Grimsby dominated as before. Amaluzor hit the post with the keeper beaten this time, but the game took an unexpected turn when the Welsh side equalised against the run of play. A Reindorf cross found Matt Baker completely unmarked, and he superbly volleyed the ball in to silence the home fans.
Town stepped up again, determined to regain the lead. McJannet looked to have hit a goal-bound shot, but Tzanev managed to deflect it to safety. Walker then should have hit the target, but put a good chance wide. Finally, just as it looked like the Mariners would have to settle for a point, the tireless Green lunged at a Khouri cross, got some contact, and the ball trickled over the line at the Pontoon end to win the game.
With three deserved points to celebrate, the home fans left to get their Man Utd tickets for the next home game, but in between, there are two tough away games at Walsall and Accrington Stanley.
