Four of a Kind

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 22/02/2025

GRIMSBY made it four wins in succession to record a perfect score for February of 12 points, traditionally a lean month for the Mariners. It was also Town's first ever win over Fleetwood.

George McEachran scored a spectacular strike before the break before Graydon equalised for the visitors on the hour mark after a mistake by Grimsby. The Mariners were quick to make amends though and went back in front three minutes later when Rose nodded in a set-piece goal.

Barrington replaced Obikwu, who has an injury following a car accident, in the only change to the starting line-up.

Grimsby dominated the game in the first period with the only blemish being the fact that they only recorded one goal. Rose headed an early chance wide, and McJannet had a shot which went over the bar before Grimsby deservedly took the lead. Tharme's long throw came back to the defender and he found McEachran in space on the right side of the box. The midfielder looked up and launched an unstoppable strike which sailed into the top of the net.

Town dominated the remainder of the first half but couldn't add to their lead.

Fleetwood started the second half more strongly and Rooney had a good chance, but his tame effort went wide. The visitors were on top and equalised when a long ball over the top found Graydon. Wright had misjudged the flight of the ball, and come out when he was never going to reach it first. Graydon chipped the 'keeper with a well-executed volley to level the game.

Town hit back straight away from the setback when they won a free kick. Khouri and Hume combined, in what looked like a training ground goal, with the latter picking out Rose's run and the striker glanced the ball in from close range.

Fleetwood were inches away from equalising again when Rooney's shot trickled just wide of the post.

Town defended their lead resolutely and their substitutions all helped their cause. The Mariners hung on for a deserved win. It was a pleasing display with a well-organised performance once they went ahead the second time, with the changes from the bench slotting in to ensure Grimsby got over the line still in front.

Grimsby now just a point below the play-offs head to 11th-placed Cheltenham for their next game at the weekend.
