Squeaky Bum Time

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 05/10/2021

GRIMSBY recorded a battling win at in-form Altrincham in a match in which they were seemingly coasting at 3-0. However, a controversial second yellow for Bapaga and 2 quick goals for the home side set up a tense finish which saw Grimsby greet the whistle as 3-2 winners, a result which keeps Town top.

Unchanged Grimsby had dominated the early stages of the game and had the better chances, it was no surprise when Taylor set up Bapaga, who fired into the roof of the net to give Town the lead. Waterfall missed a chance for one of his trademark corner goals and Town reached halftime 1-0 up, but it should have been more.

After the break Town put daylight between the two sides. A low cross from the right was spilt by the 'keeper and Taylor was on hand for a poacher's tap in. Then a great team goal with several players exchanging passes ended with Clifton blasting the ball into the top corner for what looked like an unassailable lead.

However the ref had other ideas and showed Bapaga a second yellow for not retreating from a throw-in, and Altrincham found some hope from what had looked a lost cause for them.

Former Mariner Ben Bringle came off the bench and Mooney soon fired a shot through a crowded box to give the home side a lifeline.

McAtee had two great chances to put Town 4-1 up but missed them, then Moult bundled in a scrappy goal to officially begin Squeaky Bum Time.

Altrincham created late pressure with some corners and sub Leitch-Smith fired straight at McKeown, but ultimately Grimsby hung on for a deserved win.

Town travel to another in-form side when they take on Woking in Surrey at the weekend, although they will probably have to manage without Will Bapaga as he will be suspended.
