More of the Same

GRIMSBY repeated their 3-1 win at Torquay, with an identical scoreline against Wrexham at Blundell Park in front of over 6000 supporters. Town once again went behind to a first-half goal, but soon shrugged off the deficit to go into a 2-1 halftime lead. Town defended superbly in the second half and sealed the points with a late Wright solo goal.

Paul Hurst named an unchanged side for the first time this season after the superb win at Torquay on Saturday.

A cagey start saw both sides seeking to find an opening, with Torquay looking dangerous from set-pieces and long throws, whereas Town looked the better side in open play.

Waterfall had Grimsby's first effort from a Hunt free-kick but his header went just wide.

Wrexham drew first blood when Taylor looked to have been fouled, but the ref waved play on and Wrexham reacted quickest with a defence-splitting pass to Hyde who slotted it past McKeown. The players' protests were brushed aside by the ref.

Within five minutes though Town were level. A Hunt pass to Sousa on the wing was crossed to Taylor who squeezed the ball in from the far post. Ten minutes later Grimsby were in front when Waterfall directed a header over the 'keeper from a Hunt corner.

Wrexham went close with a Young volley which went narrowly wide, and then Hyde had an effort disallowed just before halftime.

After the break, Town defended strongly and limited Wrexham to very few clear chances. When Grimsby's defence was breached Crookes was on hand to make two goalline clearances.

Pearson came on with five minutes to go to help bolster the defence against his former club. But it was another sub, Max Wright, who sealed the points for the Mariners after a solo run from the halfway line, round the keeper and into the net.

Town will be buoyed by another tremendous win against one of the top sides and their next challenge is against Eastleigh at Blundell Park on Saturday, when another crowd will eagerly expect more of the same. What a contrast to last season!
