The Lincoln Poachers

GRIMSBY produced their best performance of the season so far, and should have beaten rivals Lincoln City, and would have done but for a dubious penalty decision by referee Carl Boyeson.

Michael Jolley made two changes, bringing in Harry Clifton for Charles Vernam and left back Akin Famewo for Paul Dixon. New signing Wes Thomas started on the bench.

Town started nervously and made a couple of early mistakes that Lincoln failed to capitalise on.

Town though found their feet and started passing the ball around nicely. JJ Hooper was inches away from converting an exquisite pass by Jordan Cook.

Woolford though, Town's man of the match, gave the Mariners a deserved lead. A ball into the box was laid off to Woolford by Cook who fired the ball low past the 'keeper to draw first blood for Town.

Lincoln's best chance came at the start of the second half when a good run by Shay McCarten, fortunately, ended in a powerful shot straight at McKeown, which he caught at the second attempt.

Town had a golden spell midway through the second half when they had numerous chances but failed to produce a goal from a sustained period of pressure.

It always looked like at least two goals would be required to beat free-scoring Lincoln. They got a huge helping hand through when Carl Boyeson pointed to the stop when Collins was adjudged to have pushed Akinde in the box, although it looked more to be a case of the big striker backing into the defender. Akinde levelled the game from the spot.

Both sides threatened in the closing stages, but Hooper had the best chance when his shot went narrowly wide.

Grimsby can take comfort that they dominated a game against the title favourites. The starting XI all played well, and the substitutes all played their part too, which Thomas showing some nice touches. Grimsby were only let down by their finishing.
