Town Exit League Cup

GRIMSBY once again lost in a cup competition, albeit against higher league opposition. Town have yet to win a cup game of any form since being promoted back to the Football League over two years ago.

League One side Rochdale were the latest team to beat the Mariners in a cup, with Oliver Rathbone scoring towards the end of both halves.

Charles Vernam was the only change, replacing the suspended Mitch Rose. Both sides passed the ball around a lot, but Rochdale were more incisive.

Town had their best chance in the first half when Whitehouse headed against the post from a corner. But Rochdale took the lead through Rathbone, finding space to make a run into the box and clipping it around McKeown.

After the break Town had some good passages of play, with Vernam and Hessenthaler prominent, but it was Rathbone who put the game beyond doubt with full time approaching with a shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Grimsby have to dust themselves off and try and bounce back with a good result against Lincoln, who have started the season with a bang.
