The Final Final

THE Final Final proved to be somewhat of a downbeat occasion, the below-par Mariners losing 1-0 to Halifax in the FA Trophy Final. It means the 2016 side failed to emulate the achievements of the 1998 double winners.
It also means Town cannot add the FA Trophy to their honours won list, despite six years where they generally did well in the competition, twice losing at Wembley in the final.
Andy Monkhouse and Shaun Pearson both started the game for the Mariners, as Paul Hurst gave a chance for some of his senior players to take the stage at the National stadium.
The Mariners failed to click though and Halifax should have taken the lead in the first half, but Burrow shot wide with the goal at his mercy.
The Yorkshire side took the lead when McManus latched on to a loose ball from McKeown's interception of a cross and drove the ball into the Town net.
The Mariners dominated possession in the second half but were unable to really create anything until the last 20 minutes. As the game reached a climax Town threw everyone forward and Arnold had the best chance to level the game, but it was not to be.
The timing of the competition was not ideal, coming after the season was concluded, so the defeat doesn't really hurt anything but Town's pride. It will soon be forgotten and brushed aside as the Mariners prepare for a new campaign in League Two. With only a handful of players under contract, there is much work to be done behind the scenes in the next few weeks.
