The Heaven of Seven

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 25/08/2014

GRIMSBY comprehensively beat Alfreton in a complete demolition of the division's bottom side, and the Mariners scored a hatful for the second time this weekend. Town scored six on Saturday, but this time went one better with seven goals, got the clean sheet, and could have had several more.

Man of the Match was Lenell John-Lewis who scored one, all but scored a second with a shot which bounced in off the 'keeper and had a hand in most of the other goals.

Town took an early lead which threw Alfreton's game plan out the window. The goal was literally route one, straight from a McKeown goal kick, which was headed on to John-Lewis by Pitman, and the big striker slotted past the 'keeper with the confidence that two goals on Saturday had given him.

Alfreton had a chance to equalise soon after when Neilson failed to clear the ball, and McKeown had to make a good save to deny Hicks

Town put daylight between themselves and Alfreton when the away side were caught in possession and Pitman crossed to John-Lewis whose header hit the post and bounced in off the back of the 'keeper, for an own goal.

Alfreton were once again caught in possession just before half time and this time John-Lewis set up Pitman who rounded the keeper and slotted it in to give Town a 3-0 lead

As they did against Gateshead, Town came out of the dressing room 3-0 up and made it 4-0 almost straight after half time. This time John-Lewis was once again the provider when he set up Clay with a defence splitting pass and Clay glided it past the keeper into the Pontoon end.

Alfreton were reduced to 10 men when Howell was shown a straight red for a bad challenge. Not long after Alfreton once more gave the ball away and Scott Brown blasted the ball into the bottom corner.

Clay added a sixth to put the icing on the cake with a repeat of Saturday's goal tally, sweeping a ball in from the edge of the area.

There was still time though for John-Lewis to set up Neilson with another defence splitting pass, and the winger made no mistake ghosting past the 'keeper to finish in style and see Town score their seventh without reply.

It was a virtuoso display by the men from Blundell Park, with John-Lewis the pick on the bunch
