Three Goals. Three Points

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 26/09/2012

GRIMSBY followed up their win over Luton with another 3-goal margin victory over Gateshead. Two set piece goals set Grimsby on their way at half time, and Town cemented their victory with a brilliant third goal by Hannah in the second half. The result lifts Grimsby to fourth in the league.

It wasn't as an authoritative display as against Luton, but Town did enough to see them over the line, and kept another clean sheet in the process. With Town's miserly defence, goals coming from all over the side and now Grimsby's threat from set pieces for the first time in living memory, the Mariners are not an easy team to play against.

Town named an unchanged line-up as they tried to make it six points from the two home games and lift themselves into a play-off spot.

Grimsby scored their first goal slightly against the run of play from a corner. From Colbeck's cross Pond's shot hit the cross bar and bounced back to Niven who drilled in from close range

Town went two up with another Colbeck set piece the route to goal. A free kick from near the corner flag was missed by everyone and headed in by Pond on the far post from point blank range.

Ryan Donaldson has Gateshead's best chance early in the second half but he just failed to get on to the end of a cross in the six yard box.

Grimsby allowed Gateshead a fair amount of possession but the Mariners always looked dangerous on the counterattack, as they had against Luton on Friday, and Town had several chances to score on the break which they missed.

Town's two new players combined with a brilliant third goal in the 70th minute. A long run by Neilson saw him ghost past a couple of challenges and play the ball into the path of Hannah, who finished expertly, slotting the ball past the 'keeper.

Town have now played most of the favourites for promotion and not been beaten by any of them (only unfancied Stockport have beaten Grimsby to date). Scott and Hurst's men face a tough challenge next though as they head to South Wales to take on the leaders Newport in the pick on the weekend's games in the Blue Square Premier League. Unfortunately they will be without midfielder Derek Niven who will suspended after picking up 5 yellow cards to date.
