The Right Stuff?

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 25/07/2005

RUSSELL Slade appears to have been looking for players with 'the right stuff' this season and confidence is not lacking in two of his signings. Both seem to realise what is needed at Town if they are to improve their future prospects.

In separate interviews with the Grimsby Telegraph they spoke about their short time at Blundell Park and the future.

Jean-Paul Kamudimba said; "I think this is a big chance for me. When I spoke to the manager he was very determined and that is why I came to Grimsby. The team want to go up and hopefully I can help."

"Everybody wants to play in the Premiership - and that is possible. Firstly, this team has to have a great season - and I need to be a part of that. "I just need to show everybody that I can play and that I can help the team."

"I am a midfielder, usually a defensive one. I am here to work hard, carry the ball forward, give it and go. I can do the dirty work. English football is stronger and you need to be able to fight. I enjoy that side of the game - I can fight."

Tom Newey said;

"I think I have settled in well. I knew Craney when I moved here. There are a good set of lads here and they have made me feel welcome." "I think we can do well. We have got a decent squad. We have got some new players in and we have got cover in most positions." "We have got a couple of games left. Leeds will be a good test for us and Blackburn will be a very good test. Everyone is looking forward to those games."

If these two players represent what the feeling is at BP, we may improve our position over last season's. Coupled with Slade's statement earlier this week about the full squad not being full yet and the prospect of another couple of signings, the Mariners may prove to be a lot better than some are prophesying.

Pre-season games are not good indicators. Players are not going to risk injury by an 'all in' attack. But they do give players the opportunity to show their individual skills and commitment. The next two games will hopefully bring out the best in the squad and give a real impression of how we might go next season.
