Question of the Week

Continent 2026 World Cup winners?

Lincoln 0 Grimsby 0

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 29/12/2004

A late show by the Mariners failed to break the deadlock against a resolute Lincoln side where a Reddy disallowed "goal" and a blatant penalty for handball turned down by the referee in the dying seconds meant Town ended their Christmas spell without a goal to show from the two games.

In was no coincidence that the introduction of Michael Reddy on the hour mark led to Town's best chances of the game. Lincoln goalkeeper Alan Marriott produced a superb reflex save to deny Reddy, then shortly afterwards in was the turn of Jason Crowe to have his shot expertly saved by the City veteran.

But it was in the final minute that Town can be most aggrieved. First they had a penalty turned down when a Lincoln defender clearly handled the ball in the box. The referee's view was probably impeded, but it would have been in full view of the linesmen.

Then, with the last kick of the game, a corner eventually fell to the feet of Michael Reddy, but his goal was disallowed for pushing prior to the Irishman receiving the ball, a decision that looked harsh on the Mariners.

City rarely troubled Town's goal. although Williams had to make good saves from Marcus Richardson and Franny Green.

On the plus side, a second consecutive clean sheet means Town once again picked up a point for a draw. Simon Ramsden's performance in defence in place of the injured Terrell Forbes was undoubtedly the pick of the Town back line. Reddy and Gritton up front again looked more effective than Parkinson paired with the Scot.

A full report will appear later.
