Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Two More Players Sign!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 05/07/2003

YOUNG Mariners Iain Ward and Graham Hockless have signed new contracts with Grimsby Town. The pair, both 20 years old, had limited first team opportunities last season, but have been issued a challenge by the Town management to fight for a regular place in the starting XI during the new campaign.

Town player-manager Paul Groves told the Sports Telegraph: "I'm pleased to get them signed up, when you look at the youngsters’ element at the club, they all played a few games in the First Division and equipped themselves well.

"Now, we've dropped down a level and it’s time for them to progress again and start pushing people even more. There’s some great potential at this club, they have to start fulfilling it."

Grimsby-born full back Iain Ward played in 14 games for the Mariners last season, mainly as cover at right back when club captain John McDermott was injured. Hull-born midfielder Hockless made a promising first team debut in the final away game of the season against Reading.

Both players were out of contract before putting pen to paper on their new deals. It completes a busy week for the Mariners, who had already signed Des Hamilton plus Iain Anderson, and re-signed Stacy Coldicott in the last seven days alone. Furthermore, Paul Groves is still hoping to sign at least two more players before the season starts, as Town bid to build a squad capable of mounting a credible challenge towards the top of the Division Two table.
