Coyne For County?

THE transfer listing of Wales international goalkeeper Danny Coyne has alerted a few managers in the English Premiership and the Nationwide First Division.

Although Coyne had been previously linked to Sunderland, Peter Reid's recent capture of ex-Evertonian Thomas Myrhe on a free transfer has killed off such rumours.

The other top club heavily linked with the present fans' player of the year towards the end of last season were Aston Villa. These rumours circulated when John Gregory was at the helm. The volatile former Wycombe manager then departed Villa Park for Pride Park, home of Derby County.

Since Derby's subsequent relegation, Rams Estonian 'keeper Mart Poom has been the subject of numerous multi-million pound bids from Everton, and should that transfer be concluded before the season starts, Gregory may once again turn his attentions towards Coyne as a cut price replacement with proven Division One credentials.

It seems that the fate of Danny Coyne is largely dependent on what happens at other clubs, with leading Division One sides like Coventry (Marcus Hedman), Ipswich (Matteo Sereni) and possibly Derby (Poom) or Leicester (Ian Walker) having cut the number of goalkeepers from their books.

On a more positive note, the Mariners have a tradition for picking up quality goalkeepers on free transfers - such as Coyne and Aidan Davison before him. The main obstacle this time looks set to be how much the Mariners can offer a potential new number 1.
