Wycombe 1-1 Grimsby

After a scrappy encounter at Adams Park on Saturday afternoon, second division Wycombe Wanderers earned themselves an FA Cup 3rd Round replay at Blundell Park. Grimsby took an early lead through David Nielsen, before the Wanderers equalised through defender Paul McCarthy.
The Mariners immediately took the game to Wycombe, with Steve Livingstone testing the home defence after just three minutes when he blasted a 25-yard effort wide of the right-hand post.
As Grimsby continued to dominate the early exchanges, the Choirboys had to wait until the 19th minute before their first shot on goal.
Michael Simpson found midfielder Steve Brown from a free-kick, but his 25-yard effort failed to cause any problems for Danny Coyne in the Grimsby goal.
As half-time approached Town continued to pressure the Wycombe defence, with Tony Gallimore smashing a rasping, left-footed drive just wide from 18 yards.
The breakthrough finally came in the 43rd minute when Nielsen popped up in the Wycombe box to head home from a Stuart Campbell corner.
The second-half saw Grimsby assert their grip on the game as they continued to create good chances, however, Wycombe's direct, aerial threat always looked like it might cause the Grimsby defence problems.
Wanderers' equaliser eventually came in the 74th minute after Richard Smith had failed to clear from a corner delivered into the Town penalty area. McCarthy controlled the ball before belting an unstoppable pile-driver past a helpless Coyne.
Speaking to Radio Humberside after the game, the Grimsby 'keeper commented:
"We had most of the play and we were disappointed to lose the lead that we had.
"At half-time, the boss told us not to concede a goal from the long ball, and that's exactly what we did."
Looking ahead to the replay, which will take place on Tuesday, January 16th, Coyne felt that the Mariners would be able to draw from their performance at Adams Park, saying that they "can take confidence from the way they played and some of the moves that they put together."
