Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Mariners Cup Action

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 29/11/2000

Mariners midfielder Alan Pouton returns to action this evening as he lines up for the reserves against Stamford in the first round of the Lincs Senior Cup. The former York City man is all set to make his first start for Grimsby since under-going minor knee surgery.

Also included in the side will be Sean Gregory and Brian Wake, who are currently on trial at Blundell Park. Gregory will be asked to slot into the Grimsby defence, while Wake will link up with regular striker Jonathan Rowan.

Jason Batty, also still on trial at the club, will once again occupy the goalkeeping position while Neil Murray will feature in midfield as he looks to secure a place in the Grimsby Town first team.

Grimsby Town: Batty, Wall, Bloomer, Gregory, Chapman, A Smith, Murray, Pouton, Buckley, Rowan, Wake, Gibson, Smithson, Beesley, Kirwin.

Also in action tonight are the Grimsby Town Youth Team, as they entertain Portsmouth in the third round of the FA Youth Cup. Manager Ian Knight is hoping that his young strikers will be able to produce in front of goal as he commented "They've been doing well but not putting an end product to the play."

Knight's plans have suffered a blow, however, with the news that first-year YT strikers Giovanni Carchedi and David Soames will miss the tie through injury.

Having just signed an 18-month contract with the Mariners, defender Iain Ward will be hoping to impress along with right-back Gary Moran, who has looked like a bright prospect for Town throughout the season.

Grimsby Town: Butterwood, Ward, Moran, Hildred, Thorne, Lawrence, White, Pounder, Mansaram, Scott, Parker, Swann, Nimmo, Clasper.
