Lever to Become a Blade?

News From 10th June 2000

Mark Lever

Out-of-contract centre back Mark Lever looks like deciding to move to Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United.

Beverley-born Lever, now 30, who has been with Grimsby since he was signed up as a trainee in 1988 , is believed to favour moving to Sheffield on a "Bosman", as it is within commuting distance of his Grimsby home.

Other clubs have also been linked with Lever, including Rotherham, Stoke, and Luton, but the Blades now appear favourites to secure his services for next season, with Lever believed to be looking for at least a two-year deal.

United manager Neil Warnock, is looking to bring in some experienced defenders to Bramall Lane in order to bolster a leaky defence which conceded 54 league goals last season. The Sheffield club, who ended last season in 16th place (4 places above Grimsby), will be joined by their neighbours and close-rivals Wednesday, who themselves were relegated from the Premiership last season.
