Swindon Blow Town Away

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 24/02/2020

GRIMSBY were well beaten by a strong Swindon side on Saturday as the Mariners showed there was a gap between them and the top sides in this division. Swindon missed their chances in the first half but raced into a 2-0 lead after the break and ran out 3-1 winners.

Ian Holloway stuck with the side that beat Morecambe last week. Town were under the cosh early on and Isgrove hit the woodwork after a spell of intense pressure.

Town showed they did pose a threat when Waterfall's header from a Grandin cross was tipped over.

Swindon went close again when Doughty's effort struck the post. Swindon were dominant but Town managed to reign them in in the latter period of the first half.

With the wind dominating proceedings, Town would nominally have an advantage in the second half but it wasn't to be after a poor start. A Jaiyesimi cross was not dealt with by the Town defence and Doyle nodded the ball down to Yates who prodded it in from close range.

Yates and Jaiyesimi combined again soon after this time a weak header from and just a couple of minutes later, although McKeown didn’t cover himself in glory as the winger’s weak header by Jaiyesimi managed to elude McKeown.

Swindon then gave themselves some daylight when Hendrie managed to turn in an Isgrove cross.

Town managed something of a fightback when a powerful Hanson header made the score 3-1. The Mariners didn't make the most of the wind though and were unable to add to their total.

Swindon were the better of the side and made the most of the conditions for what turned out to be a comfortable win.

Town have a chance to bounce back quickly when they take on Newport on Tuesday night.
