A Rare Cup Win

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 14/08/2019

GRIMSBY will face Macclesfield in Round 2 of the Carabao Cup on Tue August 27th after being Doncaster in Round One, their first League Cup win in 11 years. The Mariners defended well and limited the League One side to scraps over the 90 minutes.

The game's only goal was scored by Jordan Cook, just before half time.

Michael Jolley named a much-changed side, with only four of the eleven players who started against Bradford making the starting line-up for this cup game.

Doncaster started well and both Kieran Sadlier and Brad Halliday went close for Rovers, who dominated. Town had largely played second fiddle but scored with their first good chance just before half time after Doncaster gave the ball away in midfield. Ogbu and Cook combined, with the latter finishing superbly to put Town in front.

The Mariners then had a purple patch and could have added to their lead before half time when Charles Vernam produced a fingertip save from Dieng. McKeown also needed to keep Town in front with a world-class reaction save from a header inside the six-yard box.

After the break, Doncaster once again had lots of possession but Town defended well and limited the away side to half chances, mainly from set-pieces.

Town held firm to go through in 90 minutes. The result is Grimsby's win at this level since returning to the Football League and with a draw at home against a team in their o own division, it gives the Mariners a realistic chance of making Round Three.
