GRIMSBY thrashed Tranmere 5-2 in an extraordinary turnaround at Blundell Park. The Mariners started the game slowly and went 1-0 down. They equalised out of the blue and then added a second through a controversial shot that went in off Thomas's upper body.

Once Town got their noses in front they gained confidence and after half time Davis but them 3-1 up. Tranmere themselves scored against the run of play to make it 3-2 before Town added two goals to put the game beyond doubt and romp home 5-2.

Alex Whitmore replaced the suspended Danny Collins in central defence, otherwise, the team was the same as gained a point at Northampton.

Town started slowly and Tranmere took an early lead when a long ball through the middle found Norwood, who powered the ball past the stranded McKeown.

Town's first chance came from a Vernam mishit shot which fell to Thomas, although it was ruled out for offside.

Norwood almost added a second but McKeown kept the deficit down to one goal with another top-drawer save. On the half-hour mark, Town out of the blue were back in the game after a Vernam cross picked out Clifton who glanced the ball into the net.

The goal spurred Town on Clifton almost added a second but his volley was well saved. Vernam turned provider again when his cross from the left bounced off Thomas from close range and into the net. Tranmere appeals for handball were dismissed by the officials.

Town started the second half strongly and had a Whitmore header tipped over before Davis drilled in the ball from close range after a corner was not cleared. The 3-1 lead looked commanding but then a stunning goal by Mullen reduced the numerical superiority and Monthe had a great chance to level the game but his backheel went just wide.

Tranmere shot themselves in the foot when a goalkeeping error resulted in a corner from which Harry Davis was pulled down. Rose, who had literally just come on, took the penalty with virtually his first touch to put Town 4-2 up.

A superb pass in the 90th minute picked out Embleton who drove into the box and blasted an unstoppable strike to see Town finish 5-2 winners.

Town got the break to go 2-1 up but were the superior side for the majority of the game. Recent results at Blundell Park have seen one of the best runs at home for years, and Town's league position is starting to look more healthy. It sets up Grimsby nicely for a tricky match in the FA Cup at non-league Chesterfield.
