Humberside - Speculation and Assumptions

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 07/04/2005

GRIMSBY Town Football Club have issued a statement today regarding the Radio Humberside ban and speculation and assumptions being made (probably by the Fishy)

Club Statement

The football club has decided to release a statement due to conjecture and rumour about the dispute between BBC Radio Humberside and Grimsby Town Football Club.

Speculation following a mediation meeting held at a neutral venue on Wednesday 30th March between senior personnel at the Football Club and BBC Radio Humberside is causing varying assumptions to be drawn about the status of the dispute.

The mediation process was chaired by representatives from the Football League and the head of BBC Sport. The meeting lasted approximately 9 hours during which time the football club was given the opportunity to present grievances of particular broadcast coverage associated with Grimsby Town.

The mediation process concluded that three things should be implemented.

  • A grievance procedure.
  • A protocol.
  • A joint statement.

In the final hours of the meeting these three points were discussed in great detail, it was hoped that by the 1st of April an agreement would have been reached on the final wording.

The Board of Directors insist that in the long-term interest of the football club and having come this far, that necessary time must be taken to ensure that both parties are happy with the final wording.

BBC Radio Humberside's decision not to cover Grimsby Town's final away fixtures of the season was purely taken on editorial grounds and had nothing to do with these talks.END

The statement is obviously a fair account of what went on at the meeting and I can see no reason to disagree with the club's stance about the agreement.

But it has done nothing to clear either the air or the confusion.

It fails to mention that the Football League agreed that the ban was not justified on the grounds that Radio Humberside "damaged the Save The Mariners campaign"

Nor does it say that GTFC finally agreed to lift the ban even though that was what the meeting was mainly about and what GTFC agreed.

I therefore stand by the statements I made in yesterday's article that an agreement had been reached to lift the ban and to all intents and purposes the ban is over!

As the BBC are fond of saying; "Normal service will now be resumed"
