The Football League Reject Increased Offer!
By: Bill Osborne
Date: 12/04/2002
THE Football League has angrily rejected ITV Digital's administrators latest attempt to solve the game's television contract crisis.
In what has been described as a derisory offer from the administrators, Granada and Carlton appear to be running for cover by attempting to include a settlement clause that absolves them of responsibility.
The administrators faxed the League's lawyers late on Thursday night with an increase of just £10million on the original offer of £50 million as against the full amount of £178.5million owed to the League.
What has angered the League even more so is the inclusion in the offer of a condition that Granada, Carlton and their directors are released from any threat of a damages claim from the League.
A League spokesman said: "The offer that has been put to us from the administrators does not meet the needs of the clubs. The administrators are purely fiddling around with the margins. It would take a substantive increase to solve this dispute."
Another source said "Do the administrators think we have a mental age of three?"
Other reports say that the League are continuing with their plan to shame the television giants into honouring their deal. They have employed a lobbyist who has urged all First Division chairmen to pressure their constituency MPs into calling for a resolution to the conflict.
