Question of the Week

Are Grimsby more likely to get...

Smudge: No more penalties

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 13/03/2000

Grimsby Town full back David Smith admitted he doesn't expect to take any more penalties after his miss at Loftus Road on Saturday. The 32-year-old was the hero just a fortnight ago when he blasted home the winning goal from the spot against Crystal Palace, but against QPR it wasn't to be.

Smudger said: "Obviously I'm very disappointed to miss and he (Lee Harper) saved it with his hip. "If we get anymore I should imagine the manager will be pulling me back saying 'no don't take it'. "Grovesy's taken them, Ashy's taken them and I've taken them. Now somebody else might. His miss came with half an hour left, but he revealed he hadn't changed his style. "I made my mind up where I wanted to put it but I just tried to blast in down the middle. "I always try and put a bit of power on them and today it just didn't work. I didn't get enough height on it. "I thought we played some great football and if I'd scored we would have won the game. "Anybody who's taken penalties will know how I felt. I just wanted the ground to open up and swallow me."
Of Chris Plummer's handball that led to the penalty he said:
"I've seen them given and I've seen them not given. "But we've been given that opportunity and I've missed it."
Tony Gallimore, whose mistimed tackle from behind on striker Chris Kiwomya, gave away the decisive penalty, was gutted by the outcome.
"I'm just so disappointed, I'd rather have given him (Kiwomya) the chance. I shouldn't have committed myself."
Goalkeeper Danny Coyne felt his defence had been well in control all afternoon until Gallimore's mistake had let Rangers in.
"It was one of the quietest games I've had this season. Apart from one effort on goal I hardly had anything to do"
