Rodgered!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 26/09/2006

WITH Town losing their second home game within the space of four days, time is running out for Graham Rodger. Tonight's 4-1 drubbing by Hartlepool United could well be Rodger's final game in charge of the Mariners.

Graham Rodger made three changes for the visit of Hartlepool following Saturday's miserable defeat at home to Stockport. Out went Tom Newey and Danny Boshell for Macca and Ciaran Toner respectively. New loan signing Tony Thorpe was selected up front to partner Gary Jones, meaning both Taylor and Lawson were on the bench.

It was Hartlepool who started brightest and they should have scored from their first corner when a Michael Nelson header went wide.

But it was Town who opened the scoring from their own first corner. Peter Beagrie dispatched a perfect dead ball onto the head of Fenton, who powered home his first goal for the Mariners.

The goal stirred Grimsby into life, with Beagrie in particular in inspirational form. Toner has a shot just past the post, a great pass from Thorpe led to Ravenhill hitting the post, and even Macca went close with a shot wide.

But with the Mariners bossing the game a moment of madness by Beagrie on the stroke of half time gave Hartlepool a lifeline, which they grabbed. The former Scunny playmaker decided to play his way out of trouble in his own penalty area, was dispossessed and ended up giving away a penalty, which former Mariner Jon Daly slotted home.

After the break Hartlepool, buoyed by their goal, began to dictate the game. First Daly had a header over the bar, and then Ravenhill conceded a free kick 30 yards out, for which he was booked. Liddle stepped up to take the free kick, and launched the ball past Barnes who appeared unsighted in Town's goal.

Barnes made some amends soon after when he clipped a Clark header over.

Town tried to come back into the game, and had a penalty turned down when Tony Thorpe appeared to be impeded by a boot.

But Hartlepool ended strongest. Barnes had to make two saves from Robson within a minute, and then a Nelson goal was disallowed.

Two late goals by Hartlepool finished Town off and both were mistakes once again. Barnes failed to come out to collect a Fenton back pass, and the ball was intercepted by Daly who rounded the 'keeper and prodded the ball into an empty net.

In the final minute Porter curled a shot around a static Barnes for a fourth.

With a tough looking trip to Darlington on Friday night Town face the prospect of entering the bottom three by the end of the weekend unless they get something from the game.

Man Of The Match John McDermott. A welcome return.
