Stadium - Chairman's Statement

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 05/05/2005

GRIMSBY Town chairman John Fenty has today issued the following statement to clarify the present situation regarding the new stadium.

There remain many obstacles to overcome for the New Stadium at Great Coates to become a reality. There remain many obstacles to overcome for the New Stadium at Great Coates to become a reality.

Arguably, to overcome the biggest obstacle, the football club is hoping to obtain grant assistance towards funding a feasibility study, that would include obtaining planning permission.

One of the problems with the site at Great Coates in Grimsby is that retailers will not take the site seriously (it has simply been around for too long and has not yet achieved planning permission) and therefore it does not have credibility.

Also the clock is ticking, if planning permission is not achieved by mid 2007, the existing allocation in the UDP (Urban Development Plan) will be lost. Which would mean that the project at Great Coates would then be dead.

It is hoped that if the club were successful in achieving grant assistance towards a feasibility study, that it would enable market realisation of the sites potential, making it possible to table a firm offer for the land at Great Coates.

The football club remains committed to relocation.
