Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

A win!
A win!

Happy New Year

Date: 27/01/2019

GRIMSBY ended their 2019 losing streak with another win over MK Dons. The Mariners have managed two wins at Blundell Park over the Dons and also drawn the away game in Milton Keynes. Wes Thomas scored the only goal of the game in the first half but had to play over 50 minutes with 10 men after Harry Davis was sent off.

Michael Jolley made four changes for the game in a bid to stop the rot. Andrew Fox, Jordan Cook, Martyn Woolford, and Elliot Embleton all came into the starting line-up.

Town took the line midway through the first half when Thomas, who had found some space in the box, powered in Luke Hendrie's cross with his head.

A cynical rugby tackle by Harry Davis shortly before half time should have been a yellow card as Davis was not the last defender but the referee continued the trend of red cards against Town by sending Davis off.

Town regrouped and went 4-4-1 with the mission to keep their lead intact. It worked, probably helped by all the recent practice at playing with 10 men. Chuks Aneke had the best chance for visitors but planted his header wide with 15 minutes to go.

Indeed Thomas almost added another at the other end and forced a good save out of Nicholls.

Town, in the end, hung on and finally broke their duck for 2019. Next week sees the return of Newport and Padraig Amond, fresh from their FA Cup exploits and with a replay the following Tuesday.
