Town Come Away With a Point

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 25/11/2018

GRIMSBY came away from Northampton with a well-earned point. The Mariners were behind twice in the game and ended the match with 10 men after Danny Collins was sent off with 5 minutes to go for a professional foul.

Elliot Embleton returned to the starting XI after international duty, which meant Harry Cardwell has to settle for a place on the bench. Otherwise, it was the same side that beat Crawley last week.

Town got off to a terrible start when they failed to clear a corner and the unmarked Andy Williams made no mistake firing home from the far post.

The Cobblers continued to look more dangerous but Town scored against the run of play when Vernam found space in the box from a Pringle cross and drilled home a low equaliser.

Town almost went in front via Jake Hessenthaler but then number McKeown made a "worldly" to keep the scores level when he denied Williams with a point-blank save.

Town started the second half stronger but this time it was Northampton's turn to score against the run of play when they conceded from a direct van Veen free-kick.

Town were not to be denied though when Northampton failed to clear their lines from a Pringle free-kick and Cardwell had a tap-in from close range.

Akheem Rose came on and almost scored with a late chance but his header went just over from close range. Town looked good for a point but then had to endure 10 minutes of squeaky bum time after Collins received a straight red for a professional foul.

It was a good point that Town can be pleased with and sets them up nicely for a home match at Blundell Park where they have been strong recently, followed by a tricky cup tie at Chesterfield next week.
