Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Not very good
Not very good

Not Bury Good

Date: 09/09/2018

GRIMSBY slumped to their heaviest defeat of the season when they were well beaten 4-0 by Bury at Gigg Lane. Town missed their chances in the first half and the 2-0 scoreline at the break was slightly harsh. But after the break, Grimsby were second best and deservedly went two more goals down.

Michael Jolley made two changes in defence and started with a back four. Danny Collins made his first start since sustaining a broken arm against Lincoln and Andrew Fox made a rare start at left back. Harry Clifton and Mitch Rose were two more changes from the Yeovil game as the pair started in midfield.

Bury took the lead with a solo goal from Mayor who dispossessed Grimsby in his own half and then charged down the wing, running at the Town defence, and placed the ball unchallenged past McKeown. Cook forced a good save from the 'keeper during Town's best spell and Harry Clifton just failed to get on the end of a ball in the box.

Bury doubled their lead from a dubious corner, which McKeown did not deal with and Aimson scored when a header at the far post.

After the break, it was plain sailing for Bury and they scored from a ping-pong match in the Town box after McKeown's initial save went back into play and eventually went in off Danny Collins for his second own goal of the season.

That climb was made near impossible just after the hour-mark when Bury effectively put the game to bed when, after McKeown made a great save to deny Chris Dagnall, the ball went straight back into the box where the striker shot at goal, with Adams getting the final touch as he bundled over the line. Mayor grabbed his second with another solo effort to put the result utterly beyond doubt.

Town are not creating enough chances and are now conceding at the other end. Michael Jolley has players back from suspension and international duty next week as the Mariners look to find a settled side which can work together.
