Hurst Leaves Town for Shrewsbury

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 24/10/2016

PAUL Hurst has left Grimsby Town to become the manager of League One outfit Shrewsbury. The two clubs have spent the weekend reaching a compensation agreement. Assistant manager Chris Doig will also be leaving Blundell Park to follow Hurst.

Grimsby physio Dave Moore has been placed as caretaker manager, with Town due to advertise shortly for a replacement boss. Early names mentioned (by supporters) as possible replacements include Nigel Adkins, Steve Evans and Steve Cotterill. Alan Buckley and Neil Woods are both unlikely to be considered again, although both are now employed by Grimsby at the Youth level.

Hurst's legacy at Grimsby will chiefly be remembered for the play-off finals, with Town finally winning promotion on their fourth attempt. The Yorkshireman had a sometimes uneasy relationship with the supporters, but his steady approach kept Town towards the top of the division and ultimately kept him in his job. Despite being a football manager for almost a decade Hurst has never been sacked.

Critics will say he was too negative, but he turned the Town team around and he leaves the Mariners in their highest league position for a decade. Thousands of supporters have also been gained during the Hurst years, which have consistently seen Grimsby challenging at the top of their divisions.

The Fishy would like to express thanks for all Paul has done and wish him the best of luck at Shrewsbury. There is plenty of time for Paul to guide the Shrews, currently bottom of League One, to safety.
