The Curse of Alty

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 19/08/2015 (Last updated: 20/08/2015)

GRIMSBY suffered a shock defeat to "bogey" side Altrincham in a game which unexpectedly ended the Mariners' unbeaten run. Altrincham took a controversial lead in the first half before Bogle equalised for Town after a long spell of pressure.

Grimsby came out in the second half looking the stronger team, but it was the home team who upset the form book with their second goal of the season, somewhat against the run of play. It condemned Grimsby to their first defeat since the Wembley play-off final in May.

Paul Hurst decided to stick with the team that had beaten Barrow and Bromley 4-1. However Altrincham drew first blood with a highly controversial goal. Bowerman was adjudged to have poked the ball in from a goalmouth scramble following a corner however video replays appear to vindicate McKeown's insistence that he prevented the ball from crossing the line.

Town got back on track when Bogle fired the Mariners level just before half time, and it appeared as though they were well poised to go on and win the game.

However Grimsby missed their chances and hit the post. Then a mistake by McKeown when he flapped at a cross allowed Bowerman to poke home his second for what turned out to be the winner.

The referee played ten minutes of injury time but the home side hung on for their first points of the season.

The Mariners will have to lick their wounds and pride and try and return to winning ways at Torquay on Saturday,
