Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Squad Takes Shape

GRIMSBY fans got their first choice signature today when Shaun Pearson penned a new deal with Grimsby which will keep him at Blundell Park for two years. Over 50% of Fishy readers made Pearson their top target in an online poll, far ahead of second placed Carl Magnay (22%).

Pearson had been named as a target in the press and forums for numerous sides in League 2 and League 1, but in the end the 25-year-old chose the Mariners ahead of whoever else was actually chasing his signature.

It was a busy day for the Mariners as Nathan Arnold, Craig Clay and Scott Brown all signed one year deals, and full back Gregor Robertson tweeted that he was going to sign for Town shortly. Toto Nsiala is also close to signing according to boss Paul Hurst.

Only one player has left, top scorer Lenell John-Lewis having signed for League Two side Newport. John-Lewis will be missed as Town built their team around him, but the defence was Town's strongest area of the side last year and only Carl Magnay remains to complete the jigsaw in that area. Only 5% of Fishy readers named John-Lewis as their top target for next season.

Player of the season Magnay in a radio interview revealed he was 50/50 about signing for Grimsby next season. Hopefully his former team mates all being at the club next season will persuade the Geordie to accept Town's offer.

Once negotiations are concluded with the class of 2014-2015 Paul Hurst will turn to new signings. Top of the list will be the crucial forward area. Ross Hannah, Ollie Palmer and John-Lewis have all left Blundell Park, so Hurst will need at least three new front men. For all his excellent team work John-Lewis was not a prolific goalscorer and never has been at any of his previous clubs. Hurst ideally needs to find someone who can find the back of the net on a regular basis as well as providing the link-up play with the rest of the team.
