Three Dart Finish

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 03/11/2014

TOWN coasted to victory against a poor Dartford side. Two first half goals gave the Mariners a near-impregnable lead at half time. Town could afford to play in second gear after the break, but a second half penalty by John-Lewis for his tenth goal of the season ensured that Grimsby cantered home.

New loan signing Harry Pell started in a five man midfield, and Nathan Arnold came in for Scott Neilson on the left hand side after his good showing against Guiseley.

Before the game Paul Hurst collected his Manager of the Month award, richly deserved despite the inauspicious start to October. Could Town make it five straight wins?

Town took an early lead on 13 minutes when an Arnold free kick took a deflection off Magnay, although it looked like an own goal as it seemed to go off a defender. The early goal ruined Dartford's game plan to sit back and contain and they never seemed to have a plan B to cope with the eventuality of going behind.

Grimsby, who dominated the first half, with Pell orchestrating Town's play from midfield, eventually got their second just before half time, scoring the goal of the game. Clay picked out Mackreth on the right and the Town winger crossed first time picking out Arnold, who volleyed it in the back of the net.

The second half was a tame affair with Grimsby maybe saving their energy for Braintree on Tuesday night. However John-Lewis was hauled down in the box from a free kick, and Town's big striker took the spot kick himself to take his tally for the season into double figures.

Grimsby can go second if they beat Braintree on Tuesday night. They don't have a good record there (few teams do) but with the Mariners on a roll, and with the squad on form, you have to fancy them to make it six straight wins.
