Town Axe Eight Players!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 02/05/2013

GRIMSBY have released eight players today including first team regulars Ian Miller, Derek Niven and Town's longest serving player Bradley Wood. All of them were out of contract this summer. Only Dayle Southwell, Craig Disley and Shaun Pearson have been offered new deals at Blundell Park.

Centre back Sean Pearson has already signed a new two year deal, but the other two are yet to put pen to paper.

The players released are: Ian Miller, Derek Niven, Bradley Wood, Frankie Artus, Greg Fleming, Simon Ford, Louie Soares and Greg Pearson.

The managers probably were partly influenced by the playing budget being cut for next season, and some of the players dropped would have been on the biggest contracts. Replacements will be found for most of them, probably on lower wage, although it's understood that Grimsby are also looking to have a smaller overall squad.

Grim Rob Says: Grimsby need to get closer to balancing their books than they have been, and unfortunately if that means cutting the playing budget then so be it. We see the consequences of clubs not living within their means every season throughout football in this country.
